Trevor Harrison LLB MCIArb is a barrister (1978 call) and CEDR Accredited Mediator; he is also an arbitrator, expert determiner and legal consultant.

Career
Until recently he was the London-based head of legal services for Tramp Oil & Marine and World Fuel Services, the world’s largest suppliers of marine and aviation fuels; his responsibilities included looking after the legal affairs of the company’s marine bunkering, aviation fuelling, and commodity trading divisions.  Before joining Tramp in 1984 he spent two years working for a firm of consultant marine engineers and surveyors; for two years before that he worked for an International Group P&I club.  His professional career began with pupillage and practice at the Common Law Bar.

Bodies and Panels
He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a member of the Specialist Mediators LLP panel, on the Bar Council’s list of Barrister Mediators, a supporting member of the LMAA and a member of the Governing Council of the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA). He was largely responsible for devising IBIA’s “Rapid Resolution” mediation and arbitration schemes which were launched in 2005.

Career Experience
His principal experience is as a litigator and dispute resolver dealing successfully with most aspects of maritime commerce including cargo claims, bill of lading, charter-party and other contract related disputes and, not surprisingly, anything and everything to do with (and the consequences of) the procuring, storing, insuring, selling, using and misusing of marine fuels and lubricants.  

Mediation Experience
2002-2007, Over 30 lead mediator appointments including:

  • International sale of goods:  repeated breaches of contract for the sale and purchase of consignments of steel coil;
  • Marine bunker fuels: prolonged delay in delivery, consequential loss and remoteness of damage;
  • Carriage of goods by sea:  claim for damage to container contents;
  • Construction: sub-contractor’s breach of contract relating to fitting-out of a theatre for a national dance and drama college;
  • Professional services: breach of contract claim by accountants against a private school;
  • Boundary dispute: interference with rights of access involving intimidation, criminal damage and assault;
  • Sale of business premises: breach of contract and misrepresentation.

2001-2004 various assistant mediator appointments, including with Stephen Ruttle QC, Lawrence Kershen QC, Charles Dodson, Beverley Ann Rogers and Elizabeth Birch.

June 2001, CEDR training and accreditation; February 2002, CEDR registration.

Training and Educating
Participation as trainer, demonstrator and group leader in numerous mediation workshops, demonstrations and other training activities for CEDR, ACI, P&I clubs and others; lecturing on contract law and other matters for Lloyds Maritime Academy (LMA); core module contributor to LMA bunker management distance learning course; Course Director for LMA Marine Claims distance learning course; HMCS/DCA Mediation Awareness Coordinator for Kent; qualified and active community mediator and member of the Civil Mediation Council.

Other Experience and Expertise

International Maritime Organisation (IMO)    Speaking member of the IBIA delegation to BLG 12, London, February 2008, including membership of the drafting group for the new Ch. 8 of MARPOL Annex I, regulations for prevention of marine pollution during oil transfer operations between ships at sea.

IT       Extensive understanding of building, configuring, installing, using and protecting PCs, operating systems (Windows and Unix), communications and networking; provision and management of user support and training; experience of  website development and HTML; supervision and management of technically qualified IT staff and external consultants; participation in systems design and specification of the long-term development of a relational database-derived, multi-company, multi-currency, trading system that was deeply integrated with separate financial and communications systems and standard Microsoft Office desktop products; registration, maintenance and protection of corporate and other domains; part-time General Counsel to an innovative IT company and ISP.

Engineering and Technical    Practical experience of variously designing, operating, configuring, installing, repairing and rebuilding machinery and electrical equipment including theatrical sound and lighting  systems.  He has the ability rapidly to appreciate and understand engineering and technical procedures and processes.

Building and Construction     A wide understanding of the construction industry including practical knowledge and experience of designing and installing electrical, plumbing, heating and drainage systems; particular familiarity with refurbishment and rebuilding.

Other Areas   In addition to the above, he has also had many years’ experience of human resources issues and managing the procurement and delivery of facilities-management services, including communications, security and environmental services; ensuring compliance with health & safety regulations and managing insurance portfolios.

Active Recreational Interests  horse-riding, drama, choral singing, railway preservation, community and youth matters.
